Chromebook First Look At Lenovo, High-Refresh-Rate

Chromebooks

There are 17-inch Chromebooks. (We reviewed the Acer Chromebook 317. Also Asus.) Chromebooks are getting a new screen size. Lenovo’s IdeaPad 5i Chromebook is the first 16-inch Chromebook, expanding ChromeOS users’ panel-size and feature-set options. Lenovo gave us a hands-on preview of the product before IFA.

The video below shows the device and its features. 120Hz screen refresh rate is unique among Chromebooks. More info below.

Big-Screen Chromebook for Work

The prototypical Chromebook is a small, inexpensive laptop, but the IdeaPad 5i Chromebook can be equipped with more serious parts.

Size first: It’s larger than most Chromebooks but not too big for a 16-inch machine. It weighs 4.1 pounds and is travel-friendly despite small-business deployments.

As seen below, the screen’s reverse side is two-toned. The panel’s 2.5K resolution is also higher than usual for a Chromebook, making for a sharp display at this size. The screen’s 120Hz refresh rate is also unusual.
Cloud gaming is possible on the device, which has a high-refresh panel. High refresh has benefits. High refresh rates make app and browser scrolling smoother. Late-model smartphones have had this feature for years.

Fits Chrome OS

Remote work and distance learning have increased the need for home computers, but they don’t need to be powerful for e-mail, writing, research, and video calling. Small businesses can use ChromeOS’s cloud platform as a result.
Chromebooks don’t need high-end components, but some users want more power. The 5i has more options for this than most Chromebooks.
In its top configuration (pricing not yet released), it can have a 12th Generation Core i3 Intel processor, 8GB of memory, and a 512GB SSD or 128GB eMMC flash storage. Those aren’t powerhouse specs, especially for a Windows laptop. They’re enough for a fast Chromebook, though.
1080p webcam rounds out the feature set, which is great for videoconferencing. The laptop also has Wi-Fi 6E, two USB Type-C and Type-A ports, a headset jack, and a microSD card slot for expanding storage. USB-Cs recharge the battery.
Chromebook 5i will be available this year.
