Elon Musk Subpoenas Twitter Whistleblower About Bots

Elon Musk

Elon Musk lawyers have subpoenaed Peiter “Mudge” Zatko to discover more about Twitter’s bot problem.

Elon Musk has often highlighted Twitter’s bot problem. Therefore, as the reason he doesn’t want to buy the firm; despite Twitter’s assurances that bots aren’t a problem.

Zatko was subpoenaed today and will be deposed on Sept. 9. Four days before he testifies before the Senate…again. However, Elon Musk’s lawyers are interested in Twitter’s mDAU metric.

It may seem weird for Elon Musk’s lawyers to ask Jack Dorsey’s 2020 hire Zatko; these questions because the mDAU is designed to measure how many Twitter users saw advertising.

Zatko’s whistleblower report first mentioned mDAU problems. (Many believe the report’s charges confirm Musk’s claim that Twitter has a bot problem; although Techdirt adds that may not be the case.)
The New York Times reports that Musk and Twitter have issued over 100 subpoenas to “big-name banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley); high-profile investors (Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia); well-known advisers, prominent companies that employ Twitter’s board members (Salesforce, Mastercard) and members of Mr. Musk’s entourage.”
Musk’s attorneys should subpoena Zatko. Zatko’s accusations about mDAU almost assured he’d be hauled into the Musk-Twitter legal dispute; according to the Times.
