A year changes everything. Retailers are now selling Nvidia’s RTX 3090 for less than $1,000.
Woot sells the Zotac RTX 3090 for $999.99, down from $1,999. EVGA RTX 3090 prices dropped on Amazon (Opens in a new window). Keep an eye on that item for price decreases; it was $959.99 earlier today.
A year ago, several RTX 3090 versions sold for over $2,000 amid the greatest GPU supply shortfall in history. Since then, demand has dropped as consumer and miner purchases slowed.
Nvidia’s RTX 3090 Ti, previously $1,999, is on sale for considerably less. Some retailers cut prices by half. Best Buy’s RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition is $1,099https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/30-series/rtx-3090-3090ti/. (Opens in a new window).
Nvidia is slashing prices as it prepares to debut the RTX 4000 series. Before doing so, the business wants to clear up existing GPU inventories at stores after struggling to meet demand.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang remarked, “We’ve also price-positioned our existing products to prepare for next-generation products.” We’re trying to be in terrific form next year.”
The price decreases are great. You’ll be buying a two-year-old product when next-gen GPUs are coming. So wait. Expect hefty costs for the RTX 4000 series.
Specs and performance
This graphics card needs all that cooling to deliver on its power promises. 10,496 CUDA cores, 24GB of GDDR6X memory, 1,755MHz base clock speed. We did our testing using a Chillblast-provided test computer with 32GB of RAM and an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU.
It scored 673 on Octanebench 2020 and 18,913 in Luxmark 3.1, compared to 565 and 16,093 for the 3080. It performed well in enterprise-focused SPECviewPerf 2020 tests.
Media pros and creatives will be satisfied with 3dsmax-07’s 195.16, solidworks-05’s 391 and maya-06’s 529. Engineering, medical, and scientific workloads were lacklustre compared to professional cards like Nvidia’s Quadro series, but that’s anticipated for a consumer card.
That’s a tremendous performance befitting the Nvidia’s RTX 3090 top spot in Nvidia’s portfolio. So why were we disappointed? Cost is a major factor. The 3090 costs more than twice as much as the 3080, even ignoring price changes. The 3090 isn’t twice as nice as the next model down for the price.
Specs and features
You might also argue that the card’s attributes make it unique. It’s the only RTX that supports SLI and has two HDMI 2.1 connections and three DisplayPort 1.4a outputs, whereas the others just have one.
The remainder of the line is similar. It supports OpenGL 4.6, DLSS for AI-based framerate boosting, four monitors, and a 7,680 x 4,320 maximum resolution.
