Second-Generation Satellites Will Work with Starlink dishes

SpaceX will deploy 30,000 modified satellites to boost internet speed and capacity. What does this mean for Starlink hardware? Will new satellites make dish equipment obsolete?

Second-generation satellites will be compatible with Starlink equipment. In a new paper SpaceX details its plan to avoid Starlink satelites from interfering with astronomy.

“SpaceX’s second-generation satellites will increase Starlink’s capacity and connect more people. All customer terminals can connect to first- and second-generation satellites, SpaceX noted in a Starlink document.

So customers shouldn’t worry about upgrading their $599 Starlink dishes soon. Existing Starlink dishes would lose support, the company said. “Like other novel technology products, the Starlink Kit will become obsolete,” the company argues.

“Customers may need a newer model for optimal Services,” the specs say. SpaceX’s long-term plan is to provide 1Gbps and 10Gbps download speeds across Starlink, thus subscribers may need to pay for an upgrade.
SpaceX keeps pushing the FCC to approve second-generation Starlink satellite. Some of SpaceX’s competitors oppose the idea to enlarge the existing Starlink constellation by 10 times using its future Starship spaceship.
