Galaxy Buds 2 Pro

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are Samsung’s long-awaited earbuds.

 Galaxy Buds 2 Pro

Samsung’s latest true wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, feel like a culmination of its efforts. The Galaxy Buds Pro debuted in 2021 with exceptional noise cancellation and audio quality. Unfortunately, some complained about clunky touch controls and a divisive design. In August, Samsung released the Galaxy Buds 2, which were sleeker, more comfortable, and cheaper.
In August 2022, we have the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, which are smaller than the Buds Pro but have better audio specs than the Buds 2.

Smaller, more comfortable

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro look similar to previous Samsung earbuds. Compact, matte plastic case opens and closes easily. Two earphones rest in the centre of the case, while the back contains a USB-C connector for cable charging.

The in-ear earbud design is new. Samsung says the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are 15% smaller than the Buds Pro and provide greater ventilation and a more comfortable fit. Samsung’s new “ergonomic design” should prevent earbuds from turning or moving in your ears.

Although I didn’t get to wear the Buds 2 Pro, the build quality was amazing. Both the earbuds and casing have a matte texture, and the three colour selections — Bora Purple, Graphite, and White — look great.

The slim Buds 2 Pro are IPX7 water resistant. The Buds 2 Pro can survive up to one metre of fresh water submersion for up to 30 minutes.

Better audio/ANC

Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are smaller and lighter than Galaxy Buds Pro, but they deliver better audio. Hi-Fi 24-bit audio was missing from the Buds Pro and Buds 2. Hi-res audio tracks with 24-bit support should sound better on the Buds 2 Pro than on previous Samsung earbuds.

The Buds 2 Pro have the new “Samsung seamless codec” (SSC HiFi), which “enables quality music to transfer without a pause.” Samsung’s 360 Audio feature returns to the Buds 2 Pro, allowing 360-degree audio playback.
Active noise cancelling is available. Samsung is also promising an extra +3 decibels of ANC compared to the Buds Pro, taking the total number from 30dB up to 33dB. We previously said the Buds Pro blocked out ambient noise “decently,” but not completely. We’ll see if another 3dB makes a significant difference, but we’re happy to see an upgrade.

All these audio upgrades have solid specs. The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro have a tweeter and woofer, two outer and one inner microphones, and Bluetooth 5.3 for a reliable wireless connection.

Ever-smarter

Samsung Galaxy Buds wouldn’t be complete without some smarts. Auto Switch is returned from prior Galaxy Buds, allowing you to seamlessly switch between your phone and tablet. Buds 2 Pro improve Auto Switch and support Samsung smart TVs.

Auto Voice Detect also intrigues us. Similar to the Buds Pro, the Buds 2 Pro will recognise when you’re talking and automatically lower the level of what you’re listening to.

Samsung’s battery life predictions are encouraging despite the lighter form, enhanced audio, and more smarts. With ANC turned on, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro should deliver 18 hours of battery life. Turn off ANC for 8 hours of playback and 29 hours of endurance. That’s approximately the same as the Buds Pro and Buds 2, so there’s no significant upgrade or regression.

Best Samsung earbuds?

Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro pricing. Samsung’s Buds 2 Pro cost $229. $30 more than Buds Pro, $80 more than Buds 2.

Are Buds 2 Pro worth the price? We won’t know until we test the earbuds. Google’s new Pixel Buds Pro get (mostly) wonderful reviews, Apple’s AirPods Pro are an easy recommendation, and the regular Galaxy Buds 2 are still excellent in 2022 — especially now that they’re regularly discounted to $129 or less. If Samsung delivers on the Buds 2 Pro’s promises, they could be the best Samsung earbuds yet.
